HIROKO NAKAJIMA is a London-based Japanese knitwear designer. A Central Saint Martins BA and MA graduate, her interests lie in defamiliarization and surrealism in fashion.
Hiroko’s MA graduate collection was inspired by the sculptures of Marisol Escobar and Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi. She juxtaposes flat surfaces with the three-dimensional, and angular lines with organic curves.
Geometric abstractions of human body parts and objects intimately associated with them, such as necklaces and chairs, conjure the faintest suggestion of a figure.
The vibrant colour palette draws on fairytale imagery, contrasting pale tones with darker, ‘poisoned’ ones.
Subtle use of colour schemes from well known brands encourages further subliminal connections.
The fabrics were knitted and felted by the designer from British lambswool, with the motifs knitted in.
Hiroko is keen to create something that looks somehow familiar yet alien to you.
For spring/summer 2011, HIROKO NAKAJIMA collaborated with London based eco print label PARTIMI. By using organic cotton yarns, she knitted series of dresses and a cardigan for PARTIMI. These were exhibited in ESTETHICA section during LONDON FASHION WEEK (16-20 September 2011) in SOMERSET HOUSE.
